How-to guide details fix for stuck LCD pixels

Jose Castillo | December 24, 2007 | 1:02 pm

12-23-07-stuck-pixel.jpg

We’ve heard all sorts of myths when it comes to fixing a stuck pixel on an LCD, and while the following methods shouldn’t be expected to bring completely dead pixels back from the grave, commenters seem to think the methods are at least somewhat successful in getting pixels out of their single-colored funk. Up first is the flashing colors approach, which points you in the direction of a free java applet that rapidly flashes different hues on the screen to try to get the affected pixel to change. If that fails, you can try applying pressure to the stuck pixel, and if you’re still left with the annoyance, you can resort to tapping the monitor with an eraser nub (or similar). So if you find yourself sick of staring at that non-conforming pixel, hit the read link and give the trio of methods a go — just don’t go in expecting any miracles, alright?

MAoTD #6 - AppZapper 1.8.0

Jose Castillo | December 17, 2007 | 8:05 am

appzapper_logo.png

In this weeks edition of “Mac App of The Day” we bring you the uninstaller Apple forgot to include. AppZapper is a great application to have. Unlike Windows machines that install a billion entry’s in regedit, hidden folders, etc., mac doesn’t have that, but they still install files in places you may not be aware of. What AppZapper does is, locate all the files and folders that go with the application and deletes it from your computer, leaving no trace of it ever being there. All you do is drag the application in and watch it show all the files and folders from that application, just hit Delete and “Bamm” it’s gone in seconds. Give it a try, here are some pictures and link after the jump.

Jose Castillo | December 16, 2007 | 4:23 pm

fetch_logo.png

In this weeks editon of “Mac App of The Day” we introduce an excellent FTP application called Fetch. I have been using this application for years as my default FTP program. I have tried many and this is the easiest to use thus far. Fetch is an FTP application also known as, File Transferring Protocol / Program, in which is used to upload files to your web server. Owning many websites, this is a must to have no matter what you do. A lot of websites out there might require you to download an “FTP” version of a file, the link is known as “ftp://”, FTP servers are usually much faster to download off because it bypasses all firewalls and systems and gets your download, downloaded fast. Below you will fine a link to the application and some images from it.

Saving Tigers Needs More Global Money

Jose Castillo | December 12, 2007 | 2:10 pm

siberian-tiger-grooming.jpg

NEW DELHI (AP) - Saving the world’s remaining tigers will require as much as $500 million a year, but average annual international funding only comes to $5 million, a conservation group said Monday. Most of this was given to non-governmental organizations, while governments of 12 countries with tiger populations were expected to come up with funding themselves, S. C. Dey, secretary-general of Global Tiger Forum, told reporters.

While Russia and India get up to 20 percent of money they spend annually on tiger conservation from international funding, for other countries it was as low as 1 percent, Dey said after the release of action plans for 12 countries with wild tiger populations.

“As the world’s wild tigers have dwindled to as few as 3,000, it is time for a concerted effort to save the big cat from extinction,” a Wildlife Trust of India statement said.

CompUSA sends out layoff letters: bad service extends to employees, too

Jose Castillo | | 1:56 pm

compusa-layoff-letter.jpg

Would you check out this layoff slip CompUSA sent around? We know we shouldn’t expect their director of HR to get all blubbery or anything, but it’s like the corporation really is as soulless as it gets credit for. Like, you’re really going to sit in your office in Texas and write a hundred word letter that instantly puts thousands of people out of a job, and the best you can do is “We thank you for your service to CompUSA, Inc.”? Thanks for peppering in that “Inc.” there, sure it made everyone feel great, but not even a personal anecdote or something? We’re actually a little surprised they didn’t finish it off with “and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.” Man, even in the throes of death CompUSA treats people like garbage.

P.S. -Upshot to the vultures in the audience, liquidation is beginning within the next week or two at certain stores, so keep an eye out for going-out-of-business carrion.

UK wants every home wind-powered by 2020

Jose Castillo | | 1:46 pm

offshorefarm.jpg

In an ambitious scheme than even industry proponents seem skeptical of, Britain has unveiled plans to power every home in the country via off-shore wind farms by the year 2020. Right now the UK produces approximately half a gigawatt through this method of power generation, enough to provide 2% of the country’s electricity, but nowhere near the 33 gigawatts called for in business secretary John Hutton’s proposal. According to the British Wind Association Trade Group, while more offshore farms are always welcome, it is far more reasonable to expect a 20 gigawatt output by 2020 — the bottleneck, apparently, is in procuring an adequate number of turbines. Another issue is the economic cost of wind power, which continues to exceed that of fossil fuel-based alternatives; luckily for the Brits, favorable exchange rates should help them pick up some American-made turbines on the cheap.
